CeCe Moore is a pioneer of investigative genetic genealogy, founder of DNA Justice, and President of its Board of Directors. As Chief Genetic Genealogist at Parabon NanoLabs, her groundbreaking work with law enforcement has contributed to hundreds of successful identifications and landmark IGG cases, including the first conviction, jury-verdict conviction, and exoneration. She also founded DNA Detectives and the Institute for Genetic Genealogy, helping establish the educational foundations of modern genetic genealogy.

CeCe Moore is a pioneer in the field of investigative genetic genealogy (IGG), founder of DNA Justice, and President of its Board of Directors. She has played a leading role in developing and advancing the use of genetic genealogy both for law enforcement investigations and for resolving unknown parentage.

As Chief Genetic Genealogist at Parabon NanoLabs, Moore has collaborated with law enforcement agencies on hundreds of successful identifications involving violent crime investigations and unidentified human remains. Her groundbreaking casework contributed to major milestones in the development of IGG, including the first conviction, the first conviction by jury verdict, and the first exoneration in criminal cases in which an individual was identified through investigative genetic genealogy.

Long before IGG became a widely recognized investigative technique, Moore was an innovator in the use of autosomal DNA for genetic genealogy. She has helped develop educational resources and professional training in the field since 2010 and founded both the Institute for Genetic Genealogy and DNA Detectives, which grew into one of the largest online communities devoted to genetic genealogy.

Moore has also brought genetic genealogy to broad public audiences through extensive television and media work. She has served as the DNA expert for the PBS series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. since 2013 and was featured in ABC’s The Genetic Detective, which followed her work using investigative genetic genealogy to assist law enforcement. Her expertise and casework have been featured by major national and international news organizations and publications.

Her contributions to genetic genealogy have also extended into academia. Moore was appointed a Non-Resident Fellow of the Du Bois Research Institute at Harvard University’s Hutchins Center and has taught genetic genealogy through leading genealogical education programs.

In 2021, Moore founded DNA Justice, a nonprofit DNA database created specifically to support authorized law enforcement investigations through voluntary DNA participation. DNA Justice reflects her continued work to expand the resources available for investigative genetic genealogy while providing contributors with an informed choice about whether their DNA may be used to assist law enforcement.

Press co-founded the DNA Doe Project in 2017 to apply investigative genetic genealogy to the identification of unidentified human remains. The nonprofit became an early leader in the use of genetic genealogy for these cases, demonstrating that DNA database comparisons combined with traditional genealogical research could restore identities in cases that had remained unresolved for years or decades.

Her work has also contributed to the professional development of the field. Press is a founding board member of the Investigative Genetic Genealogy Accreditation Board (IGGAB), which established standards, ethics, and competency-based accreditation for investigative genetic genealogists.

In 2021, Press co-founded DNA Justice, a nonprofit DNA database created specifically to support authorized law enforcement investigations through voluntary DNA participation. She continues to help guide the organization as Vice President of its Board of Directors.

Press earned her doctorate in linguistics from UCLA and previously worked in software development. She is also an author whose published work includes fiction and true crime. Her book A Scream on the Water: A True Story of Murder in Salem inspired television documentaries, including segments of Unsolved Mysteries and A&E’s City Confidential.

Press and her work in investigative genetic genealogy have been featured extensively by national and international media, including The New York Times, The Atlantic, CNN, and NBC’s Dateline.
